The electric Scion is making it's debut at the LA auto show this weekend. I saw a quick blurb about it on the news. Here's the few links I could scrounge about it.

Happy with my 08 XB

I looked around to read people's reviews and opinions of their XB's on this site and others before buying. I was choosing between an 08 Element and an 08 XB. Because of the very comparable specs overall, the iPod integration, 4 real doors, great design, and lower price I was sold on the Scion.
I'm loving the new XB now too! Gas mileage is about 25 in the city with intermittent stop and go traffic, but not super heavy. Compared to other small "SUV" like vehicles though, it's getting awesome mileage.

Anyone else get a new one recently?

XB rear bumper replacement

hey, I somehow lost a couple of the panels on the rear passenger side--the ground effect, isn't that what it's called? It was always scraping the curb, getting pretty chewed up, and one day it was just gone--it's probably somewhere on the side of 580. So how much should I expect to pay to get it replaced at either a Toyota dealer or a body shop? OR, should i get the parts online and snap them into place myself? how hard can it be, right? For the record, I've got a navy 2004 XB w/ sport suspension--cute as hell.

Scion: Thinking inside `the box'

Scion: Thinking inside `the box'
BRAND HAS UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH TO MARKETING
By Matt Nauman
Mercury News
San Jose Mercury News
Article Launched:05/04/2007 01:44:48 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES - What could bobbing for apples, a concert by hip-hop pioneers De La Soul and a gallery full of bright, odd works by artists with names like UPSO and Dalek possibly have in common?

Actually, the question should be: What do they have to do with selling cars?

Nothing and everything would be the probable answer from Mark Templin, vice president of Toyota's youth-oriented, urban-male-targeted Scion brand.

"I've been accused of doing everything I can not to sell a car," said Templin, his tongue only half-planted in his cheek. "We'll continue marketing the brand, not the vehicles."

Make no mistake, Scion has new product. The redesigned 2008 xB, the brand's iconic box on wheels, hits showrooms this week. It's bigger, more powerful, more expensive and better suited to U.S. buyers. (The first-generation xB was a thinly disguised version of a Japanese-market car, the bB.) An all-new model, the xD, arrives in August. It'll be the most affordable, smallest Scion and will replace the now-departed xA.

But in ways large and small, and most often in ways not obvious to the general public, Scion continues to market itself as a brand name, as a slice of under-the-radar pop culture, to what it calls "urban trendsetters." And it does this not through traditional media - Templin says Scion won't buy TV or newspaper ads to announce its new cars - but through often-subtle event sponsorships, the Internet and its enthusiastic sales force. Think of it as anti-marketing marketing.

In December, it flew 300 of its most loyal owners - based on their participation on Scion Web sites - to Miami to see the new xB and xD. The only stipulation was that no photos of the cars could be taken, and, stunningly in this 24/7, cell-phone-camera-as-commodity electronic age, none were.

In New York and Los Angeles, it is staging want2Bsquare art shows in lofts or specially built exhibit halls. The shows provide a venue for graphic artists such as UPSO, who creates images of unusual square faces with his computer and Sage Vaughn, who does album covers and other lyrical art pieces. (The Web site, www.want2bsquare.com, includes games and viral videos, but very little direct marketing information about Scion.)

"It's all about engaging and entertaining the customer," Templin said.

In fact, at the recent gallery opening in Los Angeles, Scion didn't even put its cars on display.

"That's unusual for most car companies, but it's actually very natural for Scion," said Lisa Materazzo, its national marketing manager. "Our buyer is very different. They're different demographically, and they're different psycho-graphically. They're very young, creative, artistic people."

With a median age of 37, Scion has the youngest buyers in the industry. Buyers of its bestselling tC coupe have a median age of 30.

Scion also cites external data that shows it's the most diverse brand. Internal surveys show 12 percent of its buyers are Hispanic, 6 percent are Asian or Pacific Islanders, 4 percent are black and another 4 percent are listed as "other."

Besides its art shows, Scion also is sponsoring a series of free concerts by hip-hop innovators De La Soul. At auto shows, it hands out CDs full of sounds from new musicians and DJs.

But most of Scion's marketing work is done on the Web. Its own Web site, Scion.com, tells potential customers about the trio of cars it sells, but it also includes a calendar of events it sponsors around the country. The brand is very active on social sites such as Whyville and Second Life. And, on owner-created sites such as ScionLife.com, forums connect drivers to Scion car clubs and tell them where to find hot after-market parts from shift knobs to body kits.

While Toyota advertises heavily to sell its mainstream models such as Camry and Tundra and isn't shy about doing Toyotathons to push the sheet metal, the subtle approach seems to be working with Scion.

The brand made its debut in California in 2003 and nationwide in 2004. U.S. dealers sold 173,000 Scions last year, up 10.6 percent from 2005.

Much credit goes to people such as John Park and Elyce Hurd. Park is the Scion sales manager at Elk Grove Scion near Sacramento. Hurd has the same job at Stevinson Scion East, in the Denver suburb of Aurora.

Park does an annual rally for his customers, with a caravan of 50 or more cars heading up Highway 50 to Apple Hill for games and driving fun. He talks about owners spending more on personalized parts than they do on their cars, and some getting angry at him if they find out there's an accessory he didn't tell them about.

Hurd, 24, bought a tC, joined a Scion club, souped up her car, won some awards and eventually became a sales associate. Her e-mail reflects the significance of Scion in her life. It's ScionGoddess@gmail.com.

Scion owners, especially the young ones, seem to believe in the brand's authenticity, said Robert Choo, editor of Turbo & High-Tech Performance magazine.

"They love to personalize their cars," he said. "If you go to any of the Scion events, they are pretty much a lot of kids who like to be stylish."

The brand's connection to Japan is important, as is the supply of after-market parts, he said.

Jim Hall, a longtime industry analyst with AutoPacific in Michigan, marvels at Scion's appeal.

"There's substance here," he said. "They did one brilliant thing. They have not made the mistake of every other youth marketer that's tried and failed. They never even used the word `youth.'"

Joseph Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting in New Jersey, said Scion has "staked out a piece of territory that a lot of other carmakers would love to have." But it's more than marketing, he says. Vehicles like the xB and tC are perfectly suited for young, urban buyers.

He expects the brand to grow by another model and to top 200,000 sales in a few years. What's next? A tC replacement and perhaps "a trucklet or a mini-SUV of some sort," he said.

At the Tokyo auto show, Toyota debuted a metallic lime green bB concept, a very production-ready (by the looks of it) compact van-shaped vehicle. Why should you care? Because what we know as the Scion xB started life several years before its US debut as the first-generation Toyota bB, sold only in Japan. I'm guessing that this is the latest version of the xB concept that we saw earlier this year, and that we'll be driving these sometime in 2007:

poor dealer installs

can anyone tell me why scion offers a wide range of upgrades that were clearly never fully tested in the cars themselves.. or are so poorly installed as to ruin why you paid for the upgrade in the first place?

my biggest beef is the subwoofer. yeah i cheaped out and went for a dealer install sub.. but at the time it was all i could afford. however this does not excuse why scion never actually tested this in their cars in the first place. I dont even fully crank the damn thing and it has already rattled pieces of the car apart. the biggest issue i have is with the speaker covers.

how much would it have cost to put a damn screw into the covers? atleast that you can tighten. atleast that doesnt rattle anytime you turn the bass above 0.

the second biggest beef was that noone.. and i mean noone at the scion dealership /toyota place i went to.. could install the fucking sub properly. first they mount it with screws that pretty much penetrate the thin foam of the underplating all the way to the spare tire.. where i had to put 2 towels under them just to keep them from rattling when i turn it on.. against the wheel. next they installed the damn thing backwards where it doesnt ventilate the compressed air properly instead muffled and muddied the bass, because it is pretty much butted against the hub.

anyone who would have bothered to test this for even a couple days would see that the even low end 300 watt sub woofer would rattle that car to pieces.. showing me exactly how low grade my interior was.

anyone ever think of sound insullation?

Daihatsu Coo.

Saw this on Autoblog this morning: Daihatsu just unveiled a boxvan called the Coo, and it's a spitting image of the t2B concept that Scion came out with for last year's New York Auto Show:

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/13/daihatsu-coo-dead-ringer-for-scion-bb/

Of course, Daihatsu is owned by Toyota, so it looks like what we have here is badge-engineering. Or maybe Toyota decided not to use the t2B as the model for the next xB.

Here's more on the t2B concept:

wheel bearings and cd player

just had my xb serviced today, and was told that the bearings on the right rear side are wearing out. wierd! they can't figure out why.
also, last year i had a problem with the cd player, it was intermittently not ejecting cd's, and last august, at about 1.5 years old, the cd player jammed. they had to replace it. now the new one has been doing the same, and they're replacing it again.
both issues are under warranty, it's no prob to get fixed. but i'm wondering if others have had similiar issues with wheel bearings or cd players.

Left Lane has the news on the tC Release Series 2.0, which sports a metallic blue paint job, iPod hook-up, and LED-equipped sound system. Custom grille, too:

http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/03/22/scion-announces-pricing-for-2006-tc-release-series-20/

This better not be the concept tC they were talking about for the New York show...

This marketing technique that tribe is experimenting with has finally taken off...
Look at all the postings about new Scion stuff...
Oh wait... They're all from Elliot, who works for tribe...
And virtually nobody's paying any attention to them...

Maybe that's because grassroots marketing is doomed to failure if we can tell it's not really grassroots.

New tC?

Autoblog has word on a rumored "all-new coupe" for Scion, to debut at the NY Auto Show in a month (April 14-23, 2006. Given that Scion has said that they'll be replacing their models every few years (rather than adding new models) this would suggest that the new coupe is going to be the new tC:

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/15/scion-to-debut-all-new-sports-coupe-at-ny-auto-show/

I wonder if they're going to present a concept, like the t2B, or something that's closer to market...

Dodge Hornet Concept.

Dodge has a new concept car at the 2006 Geneva show -- the Hornet. When I saw this this morning, my first thought was: "It looks like they took an xB and slammed it wheels-first on top of an xA." Lots of big photos here:

http://www.mph-online.com/web/prtranslated/00534

It's a compelling package, though. Gotta love those wheels pushed out to the far corners. I wonder how the final product will stack up? The domestics are sort of late to the game for this segment, but they have substantial advantages in horsepower and pricing.

I really hope the rallye-inspiration carries over into the small cars that other manufacturers are preparing. In Europe there's such a thing as high quality, high performance, subcompact (cheap) cars, but we haven't gotten it right here in America yet.

Scion just announced the Release Series 3.0 xB -- it's in "Envy Green" with special seven-spoke wheel covers, a blocked-out grille and a spoiler over the back window. The big news, though, is on the inside: along with a six-speaker Alpine sound system, 3.0 gets twin 7-inch LCDs in the backs of the headrests. That's right, LCDs. Standard. There will only be 2,200 of these made, so get in line...

The Car Connection has the first shot of what looks like a new Scion xB:

www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp

It's pretty obviously a test frame with pieces of the current xB grafted on (click on the thumbnail to get a larger view of it in all its taped-up glory). If the dimensions are real, though, then the new xB will be quite a big larger than the current one.

This is a little off-topic, but did anyone check out the Top Gear marathon that was on Discovery Channel last night? Top Gear is a kick-ass UK show that races all kinds of cars, rates their coolness, and consists mainly of the hosts insulting each other in funny ways. They're bringing it to the US, with a new cast, and we'll see if it survives the translation...

Hopefully they'll repeat the marathon. Autoblog has more information:
Hey Guys,

I think I posted something about this at the end of last year but wanted to mention it again because our deadline is coming up on January 31st!

This year's Canadian design and media culture festival, digifest, is looking for modifications to be considered in our New Voices competition. Check out our website at http://www.dx.org/digifest and download the Call for Submissions - if you've bought a Scion or other car and worked on it to make it what you think it should be then we would love to hear from you.

Cheers,

I noticed that the Sciontology tribe has been deleted, and it's moderator unsubbed. Is it against the new TOU to poke fun at sponsored tribes?

So, how's this tribe working out for y'all?

Seems like there are barely any posts, and the only ones that are complementary about scions come from Elliot.

What I'm wondering is, does Tribe consider this Sponsored Tribe method of marketing to be successful? At what point would it be considered to have worked?

Also, scion owners on this tribe should know about scion-owners.com, which is unsponsored, and therefore less likely to have any postings that are hidden advertisements for the Toyota products. Scion-owners.com's board is much more active than this one too.

For mechanical quality, JD Power and associates rates the Scion tC, xB and xA all the same...

2 out of 5.

Does that affect anybody's decision to buy a scion?
Do current scion owners agree with these ratings?

Just wanted to let you know that some big changes that are on the way for the Scion tribe. We'll be debuting a revised interface very soon, featuring all recent posts located in one convenient place. This means you'll be able to check out photos of members' custom rides more quickly, as well as get a better sense of all the different posts people are making to the tribe.

In short, the Scion tribe will look very much the same, but it'll be a lot easier to use. Stay tuned.

More on the new Japanese bB.

Autoblog has more details on the new Japanese bB (the equivalent of the xB here):

http://www.autoblog.com/2005/12/27/the-next-scion-xb/

I've posted a photo of the exterior in the photo album -- the Autoblog article has interior shots too.

Apparently the goal with the bB was to create a "car-shaped music player," and so it has a 9-speaker surround sound system, plus a light show. It's also interesting that the bB comes with an option for 4-wheel drive in Japan.

As for the styling... I think it's a logical step from the current xB, but not as Predator-futuristic as the t2B concept earlier this year. For some reason, it's reminding me of a cross between a PT Cruiser and a '78 Camaro. Still tall and boxy, but with that leaned-back funk.

I assume you've seen this:

http://www.tuningnews.net/news/041011/scion-xb-widebody.php

It's a widebody xB modification, commissioned by Scion (and Pioneer, I believe). What makes it so special? The whole REAR SECTION UNFOLDS TO REVEAL A FULLY FUNCTIONAL DJ BOOTH. It's like a Transformer, except its mission is to execute full force beats.

I've seen this thing in person (check the article for a whole bunch of photos, one of which is in this tribe's photo album). It's like a rolling special effect.

http://www.urbanracer.com/articles/anmviewer.asp?a=1671&z=2

It's an xA speedster -- basically an xA with the top chopped off and some trick skeleton "doors." As usual, 5-Axis has added some motorized goodies...

Scion tC: Suggestions for new models

Hopefully, Scion corp. will be active on this board as I have read and they'll start talking with about our cars. THis thread I hope will be a forum for constructive ideas of what us current scion owners would like to see in the future. So I'll get the ball rolling for us tC owners...

Things I think would add even more desieravility to the tC.
1) A rear windshield wiper.
2) An option to buy window rain guards. The tC drips water into the car BADLY without these babies.
3) Competative aftermarket part pricing. And here is what I mean: a lot of the goodies Scion offers us is, IMO, overpriced compared to the same/similar aftermarket products. If you shop around, you can find the SAME items cheaper, with little effort. Hell, i've found name brand parts cheaper. As a suggestion for Scion corporate, you ladies and gents might want to do some research. I know thats what kept me from adding on a but load of stuff under my financing. I knew I could get the same for half the cost :(

FWIW, they're doing almost everything right, right off the bat. Thanks Toyota-Scion. Love my tC and you've got a loyal buyer for years to come.

Check it -- this is the project I had to keep under wraps when I visited Troy at 5-Axis a couple of months ago:

http://www.urbanracer.com/articles/anmviewer.asp?a=1665&z=2

It's a heavily chopped and modified xA, turned into a topless speedster. The article has some photos of the construction process, and Part 2 showing the finished product is due soon.

I've seen the thing in person, painted and basically finished, and it's completely different than any xA you've seen. Looks mean.

I shut it off and check the oil, water, etc. Everything looked good, I still have over a 1000 miles before its time to change the oil again. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

5-Axis: concept car workshop.

JTuned.com just posted this article on 5-Axis Models. What's 5-Axis, you say? It's where Scion gets its concept mods and full cars (like the t2B) made. Troy Sumitomo, an Art Center graduate, founded and runs the facility in Huntington Beach (Southern California). It's pretty much a tuner's dream: a warehouse loaded with project cars and all the tools to modify them. CAD workstations, blueprints, fiberglass, clay, glass, videogame consoles, LCD TVs, hydraulics -- all of these things go into the cars.

If it sounds like I've been there, well, I have -- I was there last month to take a look at a secret project car that I can't really talk about for a couple of weeks. But I will tell you that along with the t2B concept car, Troy's team worked on the xB (DJ Booth) and tC (automatic hatch LCD TV) concepts for the big shows. They also created the SUV concept that became the Acura MDX.

Check out the article -- it's got some good photos of the sketches that they work from:

Rado & Durst tC drag cars.

IGN covers Christian Rado and Leslie Durst's tC dragsters:

http://cars.ign.com/articles/622/622364p1.html

"
While we like to make fun of drag racing around here, we really have to give props to these cars. Rado's car is a beast: this front-drive Scion tC runs on methanol and produces a whopping 1,200 horsepower from its 2.7 liter 3RZFE engine. The drag car only weighs 2,000 pounds, so you know this is gonna be one hell of a fast ride.

Durst's car, while not as crazy as Rado's, is still really impressive. Durst's tC keeps the stock 2.4 liter 2AZFE engine that comes with the car stock. However, this engine has been prepped for racing, and can produce 320 horses while running on methanol. This tC will sport a full tube-frame chassis, and Durst expects to run consistent 9s.
"

Check the photo album for photos from the article.

anyone know of a site or has any pics of any xA body graphic pics? I'm looking for pics of the graphics from the dealership, made by Scion not custom made. Their price ranges from $60-$200 and I can't seem to find the pics of them anywhere. (not even the dealership or scion.com) Thanks

xB vs. Element comparo.

Slate compares the Scion xB and the Honda Element:

http://slate.msn.com/id/2103009/

"
Def Cab for Cutie
Toyota's subversive anti-car.

Final selling point: a peculiar kind of authenticity, as an unadulterated example of a weird, hybrid, previously nonexistent automotive genre. The Element is a fake Panzer, badly in need of a big, tough engine to match its big, tough looks. The Scion is exactly what it pretends to be: a polished, snazzy-looking carrier for you and your friends that does everything you need an urban car to do. It's fast enough and more than roomy enough—a serotonin-elevating design statement, with its lip-gloss paint job, speckled seats and happy off-kilter speedometer. (Even the Vehicle ID plate is cool-looking.) You can carry practically anything and have about as much fun carrying it as you can have legally in a front-drive vehicle on public roads.
"

It's kind of gushy, but gets the point across. Photos of the two cars, too.

What do people think of the Element, anyway?

Hello all...gotta say, I am really enjoying my new tC. Shopped around for a couple of months before I decided on it. Test drove quite a few models, and was generally underwhelmed by most of the models in my price range. I was so happy that while I was at the Toyota dealership that the Scions caught my eye. :-)

I have to share with you some experiences I have had regarding the public and my car. At least a couple of times a week, someone will either stop me at an intersection, or come up to me in a parking lot and want to ask me about my car. On my way home this afternoon, the people in the next car rolled down thier windows and quizzed me about how I like my car, and how cute it was. And yesterday, a kid in a grocery parking lot asked if he could look inside. I must confess, I like the attention. ;-)

Other Scion concepts?

Man, this article came out in March, but I just noticed some tantalizing details in the last paragraph:

<quote>
Scion also presented two other vehicles in one-quarter scale model form. The "Cargo" is a two-seater mini-truck with a small bed for messy gear. The Fastback takes a more aggressive approach to the t2B with a steeply raked rear hatch.
</quote>

http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=102050

Has anyone seen these? Are there photos online anywhere? The Cargo sounds a bit like an old Subaru BRAT (a.k.a. the just-discontinued Baja)...

Well I am on my third Scion so far... I purchased my first one, a 2004 xA, in December of 2003... loved it so much... it served me well but it got totalled in February of this year. With the insurance money I decided to get a brand new 2005 xB... had it for less than a month before it got totalled in a crash eerily very similar to the first one... well i got another xB, and so far i haven't had any crazy idiots try and total this one... but i am still very paranoid when i am driving...

oh yeah, all three were black sand pearl Scions from S.F. Scion...

my two pet peeves about the xB:

1) The sunvisors seem very cheap... they are small and the little mirrors with the velcro flaps are jokes...

2) The interior light-- there is only one (!) and it is very dim...

oh yeah, i also liked the xA's center dash compartment better than the xB's ... the push-activated spring-loaded door was much classier than the xB's flip down door...

t2B Concept Car.

Back in March, Scion debuted the t2B concept car at the New York Auto Show. Jalopnik has photos of it here (there's a side photo in the photo album of this tribe):

http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/auto-shows/new-york/new-york-auto-show-more-on-the-scion-t2b-concept-037233.php

I think it looks like a rolling version of the Predator's facemask. It's a mild rework of the xB box van concept, and I was hoping for something more dramatic -- back before the debut the rumors were that Scion was going to do something totally different. More like a 4th model, rather than a reworking of one of their existing ones.

What I'd like to see is a cheap, compact rear wheel drive 2-seater, which no car manufacturer really makes today. It could be coupe-shaped or even something like a GTI. But if Scion were to package it properly (both from a content standpoint and all the great details that they're known for) they could have a real hit. The racing scene is hurting for a reasonably priced, fairly lightweight RWD project car -- especially since Nissan stopped selling the 240SX a couple of years ago.

I could see how this would have been a weak argument 10 years ago, when no one was interested in the racer angle. But now everything's all about customization and performance for this segment. If anyone was to do it, it would be Scion. (But what I really think is going to happen is that Nissan is going to return with a cheap RWD coupe and be the performance leader.)

Is anyone racing Scions? Any FWD drag tC's or xB's?

I have this little dream of a Supra-engined RWD-converted xA, a la the Renault Clio Turbo...
